THE SLOPE HOUSE

Our project called "The Slope House", through its new additions, evinces a harmonious synthesis of the poetry of the site and the undulating, sloped topography upon which it rests.

In the current world context, a healthy environment that is also visually enticing in our homes has become increasingly sought out within residential projects. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is through a thoughtful landscape design that complements the built project.

The project brief, set by our clients, was a rear extension on the ground floor, garage conversion for an extra study room and a potential outdoor decking with a seating area. A loft conversion was also included for the new master bedroom. The garage was converted into a new study, for the client's home office. In addition, a new side entrance on the west facade was added to make an easy transition directly to the garden.

Having to reconsider the typography of the landscape and the effect of the structural elements of an extension, raised questions on how we would use the poetics of the site to integrate a free-flowing spacial design that can combat the landscape to combine the exterior and the interior with the sloping terrain it sits on through.

Our design concept was to create a multi-level contemporary design that will produce a pathway leading toward the garden. This began in the home, with the extension, which contains a kitchen and a breakfast lounge area, separate from the lounge located by the entrance. This lounge would be a comfortable, relaxing space mostly used in the morning but also a space that can be utilised for large gatherings. We had made a design choice to expose structural beams to keep the light feeling from the open plan layout. Using the split-level design, allows each area to have a space of its own.

We have separated the kitchen and dining spaces with polished concrete flooring, to be a higher level than the lounge separating the eating space with the space to unwind. The new bathroom is also hidden and separated away from the open plan behind the oak timber panels. The sunken lounge is particularly placed southwest of the home to have larger proximity to the garden view with the large almost floor-to-ceiling, double-glazed windows. This leads outward towards the 3 part patios. The patio is separated into 3 parts, 1. Garden lounge 2. Small seating area access from the kitchen, which is secluded from the outdoor lounge. 3. Garden dining area. Each of these zones is linked with small steps that lead to the lower garden that contains a bbq and playground.

Every component of this project has been a reflection of the environment and the landscaping within site. Our project called "The Slope House", through its new additions evinces a harmonious synthesis of the poetry of the site and the undulating, sloped topography upon which it rests.
