Listed Building Consent Granted in Milner Place, Islington

We’re delighted to share that our proposal for a Grade II listed property on Milner Place in Islington has recently received both Listed Building Consent and Planning Permission.

The approved scheme includes the installation of a new iron balustrade in the rear garden and retrospective approval for a window fitted at basement level in the front lightwell. While seemingly modest in scope, works involving listed buildings always bring a unique set of challenges.

Navigating Heritage Constraints

Working with listed buildings, especially within conservation areas like this part of Islington, means every design decision is under close scrutiny. Even minor alterations such as changing a window frame or installing a garden feature must respect the building’s historic fabric, materiality, and architectural significance.

We worked closely with the local authority to ensure the detailing, materials, and finishes for both the balustrade and the window complied with heritage standards. This included using traditional timber for the window frame and ensuring all new works matched the existing context in terms of colour, profile, and method.

Thoughtful Restoration & Sensitive Intervention

At Bourne Architects, we see listed buildings not as constraints but as opportunities for thoughtful restoration. In this project, our approach balanced conservation with practical upgrades, retaining character while improving function.

Approval like this doesn’t just reflect good design, it’s also the result of clear dialogue with conservation officers, well-documented heritage statements, and a careful planning strategy.

Looking Ahead

As works begin on-site, we’re excited to bring this vision to life and enhance the long-term integrity of the property. If you’re planning alterations to a listed home or working within a conservation area, we’d be happy to help navigate the process.
