Bourne Architects is a RIBA Chartered practice specialising in heritage and conservation work across Islington and the surrounding North and Central London boroughs — including Canonbury, Barnsbury, Highbury, Angel, Camden, Hampstead, Hackney, King's Cross and Clerkenwell. This part of London has an unusually high concentration of conservation areas and listed buildings, and we've built our practice around designing for exactly this kind of site. Extending or renovating a listed building, or a property within a conservation area, means working within a much more detailed set of planning requirements than a standard application. Councils want to see that a design respects the character, materials and history of a building, not just its floor plan. We prepare Heritage Statements, Design and Access Statements and listed building consent applications alongside the standard planning application, so the conservation officer sees a complete, considered case the first time. Our work has included listed building consent applications for Grade II listed properties, as well as extensions and renovations within conservation areas across our service area. Where a project touches a more sensitive designation, we bring in the right heritage consultants alongside our own team to make sure the application is built on solid ground. Our sister company, Bourne Management & Building, is CHAS and Constructionline Gold accredited, so once planning and listed building consent are secured, the same project can move into construction with a team that already understands the building and the conditions attached to its approval.
