The Fulham Basement
The Fulham Basement creates an entirely new level beneath a Victorian home in Fulham, securing planning permission for an ambitious basement extending beyond the footprint of the house above.
The project was driven by the opportunity to create substantial additional living space within the constraints of an established London residential setting. Following a challenging planning process, permission was secured for a new basement extending beneath the house and beyond its existing footprint.
Rather than treating the new level as ancillary accommodation, the basement was designed as a fully integrated part of the family home. A generous secondary lounge forms its social centre, complemented by a private gym and additional bedroom, creating spaces for relaxation, exercise and guests away from the principal living areas above.
The interior design was developed alongside the architectural proposal, with particular attention given to proportion, materiality and the experience of moving between levels. The aim was to move away from the conventional perception of basement living, creating rooms that feel considered, comfortable and permanent in their own right.
By relocating recreational and secondary living spaces below ground, the project also allows the Victorian house above to retain the clarity and character of its original arrangement.
The Fulham Basement demonstrates how a complex planning constraint can become an opportunity to unlock significant new space, extending the way a London home can be lived in without adding visible mass above ground.
